Spoon River

Pigment print on Manualis Fabriano cotton paper
Oval for headstone in Bohemian ceramics

Taking its name from Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology, the work consists of an anthology of more than one hundred portraits rephotographed from gravestones. Photographs of objects that, through the retinal act, become people fulfilling the ultimate purpose of a memorial image: the resurrection of those who are gone. Spoon River wants to reflect on the journey the image takes from the photographic act to the context of its final use and to reflect on the legislative vacuum that does not provide any kind of protection to images of the deceased making the entire process perfectly legal.

Recorded through the artist’s PC screen, the video dwells on the ethical and legislative aspects of the work. The sequence of photo and web materials dictates the pace of the narrative, accompanied by the audio track recorded during a real work session at a cemetery.
